Topeka's rich history of entrepreneurs, artists, innovators and other brilliant minds have contributed to Topeka's eclectic cityscape. Our history from our early days as a river crossing on the Oregon Trail to our free-state activities of Bleeding Kansas to the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education court case has influenced how we've developed as a community. Several well-known people have also called Topeka home—from Charles Curtis to Gwendolyn Brooks to Coleman Hawkins to Dean Smith—giving us a front row seat to greatness.
You'll find Topekans like to celebrate our history and our heritage. Throughout the year events such as the Apple Festival and Railroad Festival show off our history, as well as events like Fiesta Mexicana, Germanfest, Juneteenth and many more that give a taste of the many diverse backgrounds we have living here.
And there's no better time to be in Topeka than right now. There's more to do here than ever before, giving plenty to see and do for people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you're into sports, theatre, arts, history, recreation or just like to hang out and relax, there's something in Topeka for you.
