The House that Love Built
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Kansas provides a home-away-from-home for families of children and young adults receiving medical care in Topeka. Our mission extends to include families who are awaiting the birth of a child and also the adoption of a child. Established in 1988, Ronald McDonald House offers eight rooms with full baths for a minimal fee of $15 per night, however, no family is turned away due to their inability to pay. Our facility includes a large dining room, double kitchen, comfortable living area, family room, laundry facilities, play yard, and off-street parking. All of our rooms are handicap accessible; an elevator connects the three floors of the house. Guests must be referred by a physician, nurse or social worker to stay at the house. Because the house is a communal living environment, guests must meet several basic health and legal thresholds to be eligible to stay. Over 400 individuals stay at the Topeka Ronald McDonald House each year. These families are from Kansas counties that include but are not limited to: Allen, Atchison, Brown, Clay, Cloud, Coffey, Dickinson, Ellis, Franklin, Geary, Graham, Jackson, Jefferson, Lyon, Marshall, Nemaha, Osage, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Republic, Riley, Saline, Shawnee (outside the Topeka city limits), Trego, Wabaunsee, Washington and Woodson counties. The Topeka house also serves families from other states and countries. During the past twenty years, our house has become a home to thousands of families whose children were being cared for in Topeka hospitals. There are 158 local RMHC chapters in the United States and 269 additional chapters around the world. All chapters share the same mission of lifting children and their families to a better tomorrow. Many chapters like the Topeka RMHC House provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children receiving care at nearby medical facilities. Other chapters provide medical care to underserved populations through mobile care units and some chapters offer extended programming through grants that support the overall mission of improving families' lives.

"Less Invasive Knee Replacement Surgery"
Knee arthritis is very common. Total Knee replacement is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the Untied States (>400,000 per year). However, not every person with severe arthritis of the knee requires a complete replacement. Some patients may be treated with a much less invasive surgery, replacing only theÊ worn out part of the knee joint and sparing the other two thirds of the knee. Unicompartmental (or partial knee replacement is often done through a significantly smaller incision (3-4 inches) resulting in less blood loss and a much quicker recovery. Most patientsÊspendÊonly 1-2Ênight sin the hospitalÊbefore returning home. When compared to patientsÊwith a standard knee replacement, partial knee patients regain independence quicker and after have better range of motion. Long term results (20 years) of this procedure in the appropriately selected patient appear to match that of total knee replacement.
